From Zero Knowledge to Maritime Professionals: The Journey of Future Seafarers
For many young people living in underserved communities, the dream of becoming a seafarer often feels out of reach. The cost of maritime education and the lack of opportunities prevent many aspiring individuals from pursuing a career at sea. Recognizing this challenge, the Maritime Cadetship Program, also known as “Boys to Men,” was created to open doors and build a new generation of skilled maritime professionals.
The Cadetship Program is a comprehensive initiative designed to address the growing talent shortage in the domestic shipping industry. More than just a training program, it provides a complete pathway—from education and skills development to employment and career growth. Through curriculum development, community mobilization, full scholarships, six-month maritime cadetship training, and employment opportunities, the program transforms young individuals into capable members of the maritime workforce.
At the heart of the program is a clear mission: to develop Marine Engine Technicians (MET) who can support the daily operations of engine departments aboard PTMSI vessels. Beyond technical training, the program aims to provide young people with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to achieve sustainable employment and improve their quality of life.
The program focuses on reaching out-of-school youth from economically challenged communities. The first batch of 65 enrollees came from communities in Bohol, Cebu, and Leyte, giving young individuals who once had limited opportunities a chance to pursue a promising maritime career.
Through a full scholarship, cadets undergo intensive six-month maritime training under the pioneering Marine Engine Technician (MET) course. They are introduced to the fundamentals of vessel operations, engine systems, and maritime practices while developing the discipline and technical skills required in the industry.
What makes the Cadetship Program different is its zero-to-hero approach. As Engr. William Christopher Liu, Jr., Chairman and CEO, explains, the program accepts young men with “zero to little knowledge of how shipping vessels operate” and helps transform them into professionals equipped with valuable maritime skills.
The program also provides a solution to a larger industry challenge—the aging workforce and shortage of qualified maritime workers. By creating a direct path from training to employment, the Cadetship Program builds a sustainable pipeline of skilled Marine Engine Technicians ready to contribute to the domestic shipping industry.
