A comes before B in the English alphabet for a good reason: Attitude first then Beauty is next. Cadet Sedrick Jay Pillo wittingly shared this insight during his interview with the local TV program, Balitang Bisdak.
Sedrick’s story trended in social media sometime in 2020 when he posted as “Corn Man” on his Facebook profile. The post showed him working on his aunt’s cornfield during the time of pandemic to earn income and help his family. While he earned the moniker “bisdak-bae” on social media, Sedrick stays humble and does not hide the fact that he is from a poor family.
Hailing from Danao City, Cebu, Sedrick already completed the first 3 years of his Bachelor of Science in Maritime Engineering at the University of Cebu-METC. In 2019, he passed the screening and interview facilitated by the Dragon Interseas Maritime Corporation (DIMC) and Primary Trident Marine Solutions Inc. (PTMSI). This earned him a spot in the Primary Group of Builders (PGB) maritime cadetship program.
PGB is a 70-year-old Cebu-based corporate organization with businesses in the fields of construction, real estate, health and lifestyle, maritime and logistics, and human resources development. PGB’s maritime cadetship program helps graduates of 3-year maritime courses complete their one-year sea-service apprenticeship at Concrete Solutions Incorporated (CSI) and PTMSI. CSI and PTMSI are affiliate companies of PGB.
Sedrick completed his maritime training at DIMC last December 2019. Working at the cornfield was a way for him to save money for his family before embarking on a one-year cadetship. Through this noble act, Sedrick showed his family and the social media community that being poor is not a hindrance in achieving one’s dreams. He added that whether he will end up as a corn farmer or seafarer, his commitment to his family shall be unwavering.
Sedrick is currently on-board in one of the vessels operated by CSI and PTMSI as an Engine Cadet. He will earn his Bachelor’s degree upon completion of his one-year cadetship in September 2021. After graduation, Sedrick looks forward to a promising career in the maritime industry.
